Friends and Lovers – color theory

“Color forms its own composition.”

Analogous colors are located next to each other on the color wheel, for example yellow and green or blue and purple. These colors can be thought of as “friends”.  When colors are opposite each other on the color wheel they are complimentary. Those pairings can be thought of as lovers. Too many lovers in a picture can add a lot of energy or even conflict. Friendly relationships can be calmer overall.  Color and color combinations can affect the mood and energy of a picture. The friends and lovers approach to color theory works when it comes to thinking about color in garden design, photography and painting.
